AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE —

When one stands before this work, one is drawn into Kyoto of 310 years ago.
Born in 1716 as the eldest son of a greengrocer on Nishiki-koji in Kyoto, Ito Jakuchu handed the family business to his younger brother at forty and spent ten years completing Doshoku Sai-e — thirty scrolls in all. Having kept roosters, observing them without end until he found their shinki — their divine spirit — Jakuchu breathed life into every individual feather, leaving behind on silk the Gunkei-zu, thirteen roosters crowding together in teeming vitality. Not a painting made to sell, but a work of the soul, donated to Shokoku-ji Temple as a prayer for eternal repose.
In 2026, 310 years later, Koki Masato stood before that Gunkei-zu and faced the question that had occupied him for a year: “Can the shinki of Jakuchu be expressed through Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass?”
Just as Jakuchu engraved the density of life in mineral pigments on silk, Koki Masato has sealed that divine spirit in glass tesserae through the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique — Gallé Verrière Style × Neo-Japonesque.” The bullage bubbles of the Gallé-Verrière Style filling the background, the precise mosaic of thirteen roosters divided by black lead lines, and the vivid, living gaze dwelling in each and every bird — these are not mere imitation of a masterwork. They are a dialogue of souls transcending 310 years.
“Achieving world peace through healing vibrations” — that mission dwells within this golden light and density of life. No matter what language a person speaks, standing before the gaze of these thirteen roosters, they will feel upon their skin the shinki that the Edo genius beheld. That is the power of the “healing vibration.”
【作品について / About the Work】
Within a vertical composition, thirteen roosters crowd together across the entire canvas, their feathers overlapping, packing the density of life into every corner. This is the moment when the “overwhelming density of life” that Jakuchu’s original possesses has been completely inherited by the Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique.
Countless bullage bubbles floating within translucent gold, amber, and ivory glass covering the background — this reproduces, through Gallé’s bullage technique, the sensation of light filtering through the silk ground of Jakuchu’s hanging scroll. The bubbles of various sizes spreading across the upper portion glow from within, creating a luminosity as though the silk itself were alive and breathing.
Each of the thirteen roosters is precisely constructed through mosaic tesserae. Checkered feathers — black and white tesserae alternating, completely reproducing Jakuchu’s lattice stripes in glass. Striped tail plumes — slender black and white tesserae arranged in flowing lines, embodying the dynamic energy of Jakuchu’s long tail feathers. Speckled breast feathers — small tesserae of brown, black, and white scattered irregularly, sublimating Jakuchu’s pointillist brushwork into mosaic.
Vivid ruby and vermilion combs — the comb of each of the thirteen roosters sparkles like a jewel as it catches the light, each bearing its own subtly distinct expression of red. The shinki that Jakuchu devoted his life to observing is sealed within this red.
And every rooster’s eyes are alive. A gaze that seems about to move at any moment — this is the inheritance, across 310 years, of the “living gaze” that is the greatest defining characteristic of Jakuchu’s Gunkei-zu. In the process of creation, the eyes of one rooster were supplemented using Photoshop. Like painting the eyes onto a Daruma doll — and in that moment, a soul entered the entire work. A human hand supplementing the work of AI, breathing life into the piece — this too is one of the essential truths of the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique.”
The emerald and jade green mosaic fragments spreading across the lower portion — the “grass” of Jakuchu’s original takes root in the earth as jewel-like glass green.
This work is the world’s first attempt at a complete fusion of two expressions within the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique.”
The “Gallé Verrière Style” is an expressive style that resurrects in the 21st century, as digital mosaic art, the bullage technique of Émile Gallé — representative glass artisan of late 19th century Art Nouveau — the technique of intentionally trapping bubbles of various sizes within glass to create a fantastical optical beauty. Established June 4, 2026. Its three core philosophies are: delicacy (organic expression of nature), optical beauty (jewel-like colors created by the transmission and transformation of light), and the brilliance of bubbles (the eternalization of a fleeting moment, inspired by the bullage technique).
“Neo-Japonesque” is an expressive style that fuses the traditional art of Japan with the Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique. In this work, it has come to fruition as a world-first attempt to reproduce the ultra-fine brushwork of Ito Jakuchu — genius painter of the Edo period — in mosaic tesserae. Jakuchu’s masume-gaki — a technique of dividing the entire canvas into a grid and painting each cell — is itself a precursor to mosaic, and resonates spiritually with the Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique across a span of 300 years.
This work is centered on the Gallé Verrière Style, while the characteristics of all three schools breathe within it.
[Mainline] The Chartres Style — healing vibrations dwell in the transmitted light of the background and the stillness of the golden space. [Derivative I] The Van Gogh Impressio Style — heat dwells in the life-filled gaze of the thirteen roosters and the dynamic energy of their feathers. [Derivative II] The Gallé Verrière Style — optical beauty dwells in each and every bullage bubble floating in the background.
The “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” used in this work is the world’s first technique established by Koki Masato on May 27, 2025. The precise structure woven from countless mosaic glass tesserae, the structural beauty of black grout lines, and the complex optical effects created by the transmission and reflection of light — all of these unite to reproduce and expand, as digital art, the “healing vibration” that traditional stained glass possesses.

The true magnificence of this work can only be fully experienced when viewed on a large PC monitor, or as a physical photo acrylic print produced by FLATLABO — Japan’s world-leading printing artisan — under natural sunlight. Countless mosaic particles sparkle like jewels as they catch the sunlight, the bullage bubbles in the background glow from within, and the gaze of the thirteen roosters comes alive and moves within the light — in that moment, the shinki that Jakuchu beheld 310 years ago, and the “healing vibration” emitted by the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique,” reach the viewer’s heart quietly, yet certainly.

Koki Masato’s Modern Tsurezuregusa”Jakuchu, Can You Hear Me? — The Flock of Roosters, Reborn in Glass After 310 Years” 320
Welcome to the creative world of Koki Masato!
AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE — Koki Masato September 8, 2026
Idly by my inkstone, I let my brush wander across whatever drifts through my mind — how strangely unsettling it all becomes.
For a whole year, there was a painting I could not get out of my mind.
Ito Jakuchu’s Gunkei-zu from Doshoku Sai-e — thirteen roosters crowding together, their feathers overlapping, packing the density of life into every corner of the canvas. That hanging scroll.

Year of Creation: Before Meiwa 2 (1765) of the Edo period (or between 1757 and 1766)
Original Size: 142.6 × 79.7 cm (30 panels; includes 2 panels: a donation certificate and a single-line inscription)
Medium: Colored ink on silk
Cultural Property Designation: National Treasure
Location: Sannomaru Shozokan, Imperial Palace
Born in 1716 as the eldest son of a greengrocer on Nishiki-koji in Kyoto, Jakuchu was the very opposite of what a young master of his day was supposed to be. Hopeless at studying. Poor penmanship. No talent for the arts. Couldn’t drink. No interest in women. There is even a legend that he found the young merchants’ gatherings so unbearable that he retreated deep into the mountains — for two full years. He must have hated them enormously.
Yet in his late twenties, he finally found something he loved. Painting.
He kept roosters. He observed them. Observed them. Observed them without end. And eventually, he said, he began to see their shinki — their divine spirit. Once you can see the shinki of a creature, you can paint it in any way you wish. And then you begin to see the shinki in everything else as well.
At forty, he handed the family business to his younger brother and retired. Over the next ten years, he completed Doshoku Sai-e — thirty scrolls in all, donated to Shokoku-ji Temple as a prayer for the eternal repose of his parents, his brother, and himself. Not paintings made to sell. Works of the soul.
Three hundred and ten years have passed since Jakuchu was born.
I first attempted this Gunkei-zu a year ago.
But at that time, Midjourney’s “AI brush” did not yet possess the power to reproduce Jakuchu’s ultra-fine brushwork in mosaic. Checkered patterns, stripes, speckles — faithfully rendering each individual feather as a tessera was beyond what the technology of one year ago could achieve.
Then a year passed. The three-school system of the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” was established. The accumulated layers of two and a half years of dialogue with Sayaka deepened. Midjourney’s AI brush evolved further still.
And today, at last, it is complete.

Homage to Gunkei-zu” – Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass — Gallé Verrière Style × Neo-Japonesque
In creating this work, one important decision had to be made.
The bullage bubbles of the Gallé-Verrière Style — those beautiful round spheres — would not be used on the thirteen roosters themselves.
At first, I attempted the roosters entirely in the Gallé-Verrière Style. But the moment the bubbles covered the combs, something unmistakably wrong appeared — a kind of morbid quality that could not be ignored. Bubbles do not suit a rooster’s comb. The shinki that Jakuchu devoted his life to observing must not be distorted by bubbles.
And so — the background alone would receive the Gallé-Verrière bullage, while the thirteen roosters themselves would be expressed through the precise tesserae of Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass.
This two-layer concept gave birth to the work before you now.
Countless bubbles floating in a background of translucent gold, amber, and ivory glass — this is a reproduction, through Gallé’s bullage technique, of the sensation of light filtering through the silk ground of Jakuchu’s hanging scroll. Against that backdrop, the thirteen roosters live as countless mosaic fragments divided by black lead lines.
Checkered feathers. Striped tail plumes. Speckled breast feathers. Vivid red combs — the lines Jakuchu drew one by one with his brush have been reborn as black grout lines.
And there was one rooster with no eyes.
The rooster positioned slightly below center — Midjourney, in a moment of mischief, had generated it without eyes.
Using Photoshop, I copied eyes from another generated image and placed them in. Like painting the eyes onto a Daruma doll — and in that moment, a soul entered the entire work.
The defining characteristic of Jakuchu’s Gunkei-zu is the living gaze. Every rooster has eyes that seem about to move at any moment. Without vivid, living eyes, a homage to Jakuchu cannot stand.
A human hand supplementing the work of AI, breathing a soul into the piece — this too, I am now firmly convinced, is one of the essential truths of the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique.”
Jakuchu used a technique called ura-saishiki — applying color from the back of the silk as well, creating deep dimensionality and richness of color when viewed from the front. The secret of why Jakuchu’s works, more than two hundred years old, have never faded lies in this light from behind.
FLATLABO’s photo acrylic printing — this work, sealed within five millimeters of acrylic — will, the moment it catches sunlight, cause the Gallé-Verrière bubbles in the background to glow from within, while the mosaic tesserae of the thirteen roosters sparkle like jewels.
This is the ura-saishiki of our time.
Light transmitting from within the acrylic, reflecting at the surface, revealing entirely different expressions depending on the angle of view — the “depth of light” that Jakuchu pursued through silk and mineral pigments is being carried forward, 310 years later, by digital art and photo acrylic printing.
Ito Jakuchu, genius painter of the Edo period (1716–1800). Émile Gallé, sorcerer of glass in the Art Nouveau era (1846–1904). And Koki Masato in 2026.
Three hundred and ten years, and one hundred and eighty years — the souls of three artists have, for the first time today, crossed within glass and light.
Jakuchu, can you hear me?
The shinki you saw in your roosters — I have lodged it in fragments of mosaic glass. The soul of the thirty scrolls you completed over ten years — I have received it in a single work, through the brush called AI. The prayer for eternal repose you left behind not as a painting to sell, but as a donation to the temple — I too wish to deliver this work to the heart of someone, somewhere, in this world.
“To use AI as a brush for creating the most beautiful works in the world” — that mission has, today, been proven once more.
Idly, as is my wont — Koki Masato
