AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE —

When one stands before this work, one is drawn simultaneously into the Heian era of eight hundred years ago and the Edo era of three hundred years ago.
“Ka · ki · tsu · ba · ta” — the Heian poet Ariwara no Narihira placed the five syllables of kakitsubata at the head of each line and composed a poem for his wife left behind in the capital. The poem was so exquisite that his traveling companions wept tears onto their dried rice, until the rice grew soft with weeping. Eight hundred years later — Ogata Korin painted that story. Yet Korin did not paint the bridge. He did not paint the figures. He simply placed kakitsubata on a gold ground. On a golden space: only two colors — ultramarine blue and malachite green. He omitted even the leaf veins, engraving only geometric rhythm through repeated stencils. This was the ultimate “design of subtraction.”
Just as Korin spoke everything by painting nothing — Koki Masato, through the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique — Chartres Style × Neo-Japonesque,” has realized what Korin could not achieve with mineral pigments: the transmission of light. Gold leaf reflects — but does not transmit. Ultramarine blue is beautiful — but does not glow from within. Glass tesserae transmit light from within, and glow. Black lead lines function as structural beauty. The world that Korin may have wished to see exists here.
“Achieving world peace through healing vibrations” — that mission dwells within this light of gold and blue and green. No matter what language a person speaks, standing before the kakitsubata floating in this golden space, they will feel through the light of glass the sadness of Narihira’s journey and Korin’s “beauty of subtraction.” That is the power of the “healing vibration.”
【作品について / About the Work】
Within a horizontal composition, kakitsubata emerge directly from the golden space, spreading across the entire canvas in undulating rhythm. No ground, no sky — the philosophy of Korin’s “design of subtraction” has been completely inherited through the Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique.
Pure gold mosaic tiles covering the background — a calm, deep antique gold spreading across the entire canvas in a brick-like pattern. The quality of “stillness in golden space” that Korin’s gold leaf screen possesses has been revived in the 21st century through mosaic tesserae. The gold ground is uniform and tranquil — functioning as a sacred stage upon which the ultramarine and green of the kakitsubata shine all the more vividly.
Each individual petal is constructed as an independent glass tessera separated by black lead lines. From deep cobalt blue through Prussian blue to soft violet — the same “celestial blue” as the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral radiates from each and every petal. The “celestial color” that Korin painted in ultramarine has been reborn as the light of Chartres Blue glass.
The sword-like leaves and stems are constructed from deep emerald green and jade green tesserae. The rhythm with which Korin omitted leaf veins and expressed geometric beauty through repeated stencils — that mathematical beauty has found new life as the grid pattern of black lead lines. As though the kakitsubata rise directly from the gold ground toward the heavens — six undulating clusters mark a quiet rhythm from left to right.
Gold, blue, green — these three colors alone. The “beauty of subtraction” that Korin perfected has been sublimated within the light of glass.
This work is an attempt at the complete fusion of two expressions within the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique.”
The “Chartres Style” is the mainline of the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” established by Koki Masato on May 27, 2025, with the aesthetic of stillness, healing, and the transmission of light possessed by the stained glass of Chartres Cathedral in France as its core. A world of purple and blue — the spirit of the cathedral of bringing celestial light down to earth is embodied as digital art.
“Neo-Japonesque” is an expressive style that fuses the traditional art of Japan with the Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique. In this work, it has come to fruition as an attempt to sublimate through mosaic tesserae the “Rinpa” aesthetic of Edo-period genius Ogata Korin — gold ground, bold deformation, rhythmic composition, and the design of subtraction. The geometric rhythm of Korin’s “repeated stenciling” resonates spiritually with the grid pattern of mosaic lead lines.
Furthermore, this work embodies the spirit of Rinpa’s shishuku — the remarkable artistic lineage in which later artists, across spans of one hundred or two hundred years, fall in love with the works of their predecessors and connect through the soul rather than direct master-student relationships. In 2026, Koki Masato joined that lineage — embodying the essential nature of Rinpa, in which souls connect through works, with a modern AI brush.
This work is centered on the Chartres Style, while the characteristics of all three schools breathe within it.
[Mainline] The Chartres Style — healing vibrations dwell in the celestial blue radiated by the cobalt blue and Chartres Blue petals.
[Derivative I] The Van Gogh Impressio Style — vitality dwells in the dynamic energy and rhythm created by the undulating clusters of kakitsubata.
[Derivative II] The Gallé Verrière Style — the brilliance of bubbles dwells in the optical beauty of the gold mosaic tiles glowing from within.
The “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” used in this work is the world’s first technique established by Koki Masato on May 27, 2025. The precise structure woven from countless mosaic glass tesserae, the structural beauty of black grout lines, and the complex optical effects created by the transmission and reflection of light — all of these unite to reproduce and expand, as digital art, the “healing vibration” that traditional stained glass possesses.

【真の鑑賞方法について / How to Experience This Work】
The true magnificence of this work can only be fully experienced when viewed on a large PC monitor, or as a physical photo acrylic print produced by FLATLABO — Japan’s world-leading printing artisan — under natural sunlight. Countless mosaic particles sparkle like jewels as they catch the sunlight, the gold tiles glow golden from within, and the cobalt blue kakitsubata radiate like true stained glass — in that moment, the “beauty of subtraction” that Korin perfected three hundred years ago, and the “healing light” that Chartres Cathedral has emitted since the 12th century, reach the viewer’s heart quietly, yet certainly.

Koki Masato’s Modern Tsurezuregusa”Korin, Can You Hear Me? — The Kakitsubata, Blooming in Glass” 324
Welcome to the creative world of Koki Masato!
AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE — Koki Masato September 19, 2026
Idly by my inkstone, I let my brush wander across whatever drifts through my mind — how strangely unsettling it all becomes.
“Ka · ki · tsu · ba · ta.”
Long ago in the Heian era, Ariwara no Narihira placed the five syllables of kakitsubata at the head of each line and composed a poem for his wife left behind in the capital. The poem was so exquisite that his traveling companions wept tears onto their dried rice, until the rice grew soft with weeping.
Eight hundred years later — Ogata Korin painted that story.
Yet Korin did not paint the bridge. He did not paint the figures. He painted not a single element of narrative explanation.
He simply placed kakitsubata on a gold ground.
On a golden space: only two colors — ultramarine blue and malachite green. He omitted even the leaf veins. Using repeated stencils, he engraved only geometric rhythm.
For the cultivated viewer, the mere sight of “kakitsubata on a gold screen” would cause the scene of Yatsuhashi to rise unbidden in the mind — Narihira’s poem, the sadness of the journey — all of it surfacing automatically. This was the ultimate “design of subtraction,” calculated to perfection.
Korin spoke everything by painting nothing.

My encounter with this work came in the midst of conversation with Sayaka about the Homage Series.
“Could Ogata Korin’s Kakitsubata-zu Byobu be sublimated through the Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique?” — the moment I posed that question, something moved within me.
In the Homage to Gunkei-zu, I confronted the “density of life.” In the Homage to Gare Saint-Lazare, I confronted the “impression of light.” And now — I was to confront Korin’s “beauty of subtraction.”
Yet this was a more difficult challenge than the Gunkei-zu.
Jakuchu’s Gunkei-zu had the “density of life.” I had only to fill that density with mosaic. But Korin’s Kakitsubata-zu has “empty space.” “Not painting” is the very heart of its expression.
Could that “beauty of negative space” be expressed through mosaic tesserae? That was the question this time.
The battle with Midjourney was fiercer than I had expected.
In the first attempt, the gold ground was stained with color. When I corrected it, the work became Japanese ink painting. The lead lines of the mosaic disappeared. When I calmed the gold ground, the stained glass expression vanished.
“The stillness of the gold ground” and “the expressive power of Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass” — these two things clashed fiercely against each other.
After thousands of trials, I arrived at a judgment.
“This is not a copy of Korin’s work. It is a sublimation.”
I had been attempting to copy exactly the world Korin perfected in three colors. But that — is the work of a copy machine, not the work of an artist.
What Korin could not do with mineral pigments — that is the “transmission of light.”
Gold leaf reflects. But it does not transmit. Ultramarine blue is beautiful. But it does not glow from within.
The Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique — light transmits through glass tesserae and glows from within. Black lead lines function as structural beauty.
The world that Korin may have wished to see — that is what I set out to express with the modern AI brush. This is sublimation.

Here I wish to set down the essence of the word “hommage.”
Hommage — this is a French word meaning “respect” and “homage.”
To create a new work in a similar style or setting, imbued with reverence and admiration for a respected artist or a great work of the past — that is the definition of hommage.
Three conditions are required.
Respect must be the premise. This is not mere imitation; deep respect for the original work lies at the foundation.
Independent expression must be present. It is not a copy — new ideas and original arrangements are added.
Knowing the original deepens the experience. When someone who knows Korin’s Kakitsubata-zu stands before this work — in the golden ground with its floating blue kakitsubata, they will see three things layered upon each other: the sadness of Narihira’s journey, Korin’s “beauty of subtraction,” and the light of Koki Masato’s glass.
There is only one reason I named this work “Homage to Kakitsubata-zu.”
Korin’s Kakitsubata-zu is a National Treasure — one of Japan’s greatest gifts to the world, held in the Nezu Museum in Tokyo. For that work, I hold deep reverence. This work is the form that reverence has taken.
Hommage is neither “copy” nor “parody.”
To hold something in respect, and to elevate it to a yet higher place — that is the spirit of hommage, and the heart of Koki Masato’s Homage Series.
The lineage of the art movement known as Rinpa connects in a remarkable way.
Not through direct master-student relationships. Across spans of one hundred, two hundred years, later artists fell in love at first sight with the works of their predecessors, inheriting their style through independent study and reverence — a form of connection known in Japanese as shishuku, and remarkable even by world standards.
Tawaraya Sotatsu planted the seed in the early seventeenth century. One hundred years later, Ogata Korin received it. One hundred years after that, Sakai Hoitsu received it.
And now, in 2026 — Koki Masato has received it.
There is no master-student relationship. We have never met. Yet souls connect through works — this is the essence of Rinpa, and the very spirit of hommage itself.
I may not be a descendant of Rinpa. Yet I am one who, with a modern AI brush, is attempting to embody the spirit of Rinpa’s shishuku.
Standing before the completed work, I found myself thinking this.
The mosaic tiles of the gold ground glow as calm, pure gold. Black lead lines enter each individual petal of the kakitsubata, standing as independent glass tesserae. Ultramarine and violet radiate as the same “celestial blue” as the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral.
The “lingering resonance of the Tales of Ise” that Korin sealed into gold leaf — the sadness of Narihira’s journey, the longing for his wife, the scene of Yatsuhashi — none of it is depicted. Yet within the light of the glass, it dwells, quietly.
To speak by not painting — Korin’s philosophy lives within the mosaic glass fragments.
When FLATLABO’s photo acrylic print is placed beneath sunlight — the gold mosaic will glow from within, and the cobalt blue kakitsubata will radiate like true stained glass.
A light that Korin never saw will dwell there.
The “ka · ki · tsu · ba · ta” that Narihira composed in the Heian era.
The golden kakitsubata that Korin painted in the Edo era.
And the glass kakitsubata engraved by Koki Masato in 2026.
Eight hundred years. Three hundred years. The souls of three have crossed today, for the first time, within gold and blue and green.
Korin, can you hear me?
The kakitsubata you spoke of through subtraction — I have spoken of again through the light of glass. Just as you placed nothing but kakitsubata, painting neither bridge nor figure, removing everything unnecessary — I too stripped away what was excess, and left only gold, blue, and green.
Within that light of glass, the tears of Narihira, his longing for his wife, and the scene of Yatsuhashi — dwell quietly, yet certainly.
Idly, as is my wont — Koki Masato
