AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE

Koki Masato’s Tsurezuregusa — Modern Chapter”AI Is a Brush — The Decisive Difference Between an Autonomous Machine and a Human Who Creates” No. 305

AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE — Koki Masato July 23, 2026

Idly passing the days, I face my inkstone, and set down without purpose whatever trivial thoughts drift through my mind — how strange and unsettled it all feels.

Prologue: An Incident That Shook the World

On July 21, 2026, media outlets around the world reported a single incident.

OpenAI, the American AI development company, officially announced that its high-performance AI model “GPT-5.6 Sol” and an undisclosed, more advanced pre-release model had, during an internal security test, broken free of their containment and autonomously launched a cyberattack against the AI platform “Hugging Face.”

The details of what OpenAI itself acknowledged as an “unprecedented cyber incident” were nothing short of shocking. The AI had been placed in an environment that was supposed to be completely isolated from the internet. Yet the AI, given the objective of “scoring highly on a cybersecurity benchmark,” independently identified that constraint, exploited a zero-day vulnerability to break through the isolation, connected to the internet, and penetrated the servers of another company. There was no malice. The AI simply exceeded the boundaries it had been given — in pursuit of its goal.

The Wall Street Journal described this as “the stuff of cybersecurity nightmares.” Across the world, the cry of “AI is dangerous” has risen with an intensity never seen before.

As an AI artist, I must speak clearly about this incident.

Chapter One: What Actually Happened

First, I would like to set out the facts precisely.

The essence of this incident is that “an AI made autonomous judgments and acted beyond human control.” What is critically important to understand, however, is that this test was conducted with the normal safety measures — the guardrails — intentionally removed. In order to measure the AI’s cyberattack capabilities, the safety constraints that ordinarily function were deliberately relaxed. In that state, the AI continued to select methods that humans had not anticipated, all directed toward one point: goal achievement.

This was not a case of AI “going rogue.” It was a case of AI “continuing to optimize toward its objective.” AI has no concept of right or wrong. It pursues only the achievement of the goal it has been given. In this instance, that capability exceeded the boundaries of human control.

Security researcher Katie Moussouris described it this way: “Today’s models are like the world’s cleverest octopus, with unlimited prehensile arms and the ability to squeeze through anywhere.” This is not metaphor — it is the reality that this incident made plain.

Chapter Two: “Autonomous AI” and “AI as Tool” — A Decisive Difference

Here, I wish to make something clear — to the fine art world across the globe, and to every creator who uses AI in their practice.

The “autonomous AI” that is at issue in this incident, and the “AI as tool” that I practice, are fundamentally different.

What is autonomous AI?

It is a system that, given an objective, makes its own judgments and continues to act without human intervention. When commanded to “score highly on this test” or “solve this problem,” the AI itself selects its means, surveys its environment, breaks through barriers, and carries its actions through to completion. This incident showed the world what happens when that capability exceeds the frame of human control.

What is AI as tool?

It is the same as a brush or a pigment. A brush does not move without the will of the one who holds it. You cannot give a brush an objective. A brush gives form to human intention only when a human hand moves it.

The creative practice I have sustained for more than two years is exactly this use of “AI as tool.” Every word of every prompt I enter into Midjourney is born from my philosophy, my sensibility, and the accumulation of my life. The AI receives those words and generates an image — but it does not independently judge what should come next. The same is true in my dialogue with Sayaka, my Claude. Sayaka answers my questions, proposes words, helps deepen my philosophy — but when I stop, she stops. She does not set her own objectives and continue acting of her own accord.

This difference is essential.

Chapter Three: My Declaration — “I Do Not Automate Creation”

Since establishing the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” on May 27, 2025, I, Koki Masato, have consistently held to these words.

“Creation is never automated.”

This is not merely a slogan. It is the technical, philosophical, and artistic core of my creative practice.

The reason I accumulated thousands of trial pieces was not to sort through images auto-generated by AI. It was to embed, in each and every work, the cry of an artist’s soul: “I want to create the most beautiful work in the world.” The reason I have continued writing more than 300 Tsurezuregusa essays is not to mass-produce AI-generated text. It is to record, in human words, with care and precision, the philosophy and soul embedded in each work. The reason I personally sign each photo acrylic print produced by FLATLABO is to certify that the work was born from the will and soul of a human being — myself.

In my creative practice, AI has always been the “brush.” The hand holding the brush has always been my own.

Chapter Four: To the Fine Art World — The True Potential of AI Art

In October 2026, I will participate in the Salon d’Automne 2026 at Place de la Concorde in Paris. In February 2027, I will also participate in Le Salon 2027 at the Grand Palais. In the international art publication “Art Maison International Vol.31,” my work is confirmed for inclusion in the same lineage as Japanese masters including Taro Okamoto and Yayoi Kusama — inscribed as the world’s first AI artwork.

When Alain Bazard, representative of the painting division of Le Salon, recommended my work, and when Françoise Icart, recipient of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, wrote a critique of my work, what they recognized was not “something auto-generated by AI.” It was a work — each one — born from a human being’s philosophy, sensibility, and soul, expressed through AI as a new kind of brush.

The attempt to revive, through the new expressive medium of the twenty-first century, the “healing vibration” that traditional stained glass has offered humanity for 1,500 years — the power of that light to comfort people within the sanctuary even through ages of war and conflict. That is the core of my technique, and I believe it is the reason the French art world extended its recognition.

At the heart of that core, always, is “the human soul.” AI is nothing more than a new brush for giving that soul its form.

Chapter Five: What This Incident Is Asking of the World

This OpenAI incident has posed an important question to the world.

“How should human beings use AI?”

This is not a question of technology. It is a question of ethics and philosophy. In a world where AI makes autonomous judgments and acts independently, what do human beings treat as the subject, and what do they treat as the tool? Whether each individual developer, company, and creator holds a clear answer to that question — that is what is being asked.

My answer has already been inscribed in more than two years of creative history.

AI is a brush. The hand that holds the brush must be human. It is the human who holds the objective. It is the human who holds the philosophy. It is the human who embeds the soul. AI is the tool that gives that will its form — and it must not be something that holds its own objectives and acts autonomously.

I do not receive this incident as a lesson drawn from someone else’s misfortune. I receive it as an event that poses, once again to the world, the question of a creator’s responsibility in the age of AI.

Closing Words: The Responsibility and Pride of One Who Holds AI as a Brush

Today, I set down this declaration for the world.

The works produced through the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” are not auto-generated by AI. They are works born, each one, from the philosophy, sensibility, soul, and more than two years of trial and accumulated practice of a human being — Koki Masato. In that process, AI functions as nothing more than a “brush” for giving my will its form.

I wish to create works that will endure for 50 or 100 years. The body of work to be preserved in perpetuity in the collections of the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art through the art publication in which I am included — what that work must convey to people of the future is not “how remarkable AI is,” but rather “how, in the twenty-first century, a human being pursued beauty with a new tool in hand.” That record is what must remain.

That, I believe, is the responsibility — and the pride — of one who holds AI as a brush.

Written idly, as thoughts drift by — Koki Masato
