山口農園では、栽培していた約5000本のハスカップの木のうち、約500本が土砂崩れによって埋没・消失した。長年かけて育ててきた木が、一夜にして土の下に消えた。

それでも——山口善紀さんは、諦めなかった。

500本を失った農園に、1000本以上の苗木を植えた。さらに、被害を受けた周辺の農園にも、自らのハスカップの苗木を分け与えた。

しかし今日、私は気づいた。

北海道の厚真町という片田舎で、土砂崩れで農園を失いながら、それでも倍の苗木を植え直し、周囲の農園にも苗木を分け与えた山口善紀さんの生き方が、りくりゅうと全く同じ魂を持っているということを。

With nothing better to do, sitting before my inkstone, I jot down whatever drifts through my mind, however aimless — and in doing so, I find myself oddly possessed by something like madness.

Prologue: In a Small Corner of Hokkaido, Learning a Universal Truth

July 5, 2026.

Atsuma, Hokkaido.

Today, I came to pick haskap berries.

As my fingertips turned purple, I plucked each tiny fruit one by one. About three kilograms. The berries I harvested today I will wash carefully, freeze, and preserve. Until the haskap season comes again next summer, I will eat a little of these three kilograms at a time, maintaining my health with this fruit of eternal youth.

As I picked, a thought came to me.

Where did these berries come from?

Chapter One: A Gift from Siberia, Carried by a Bird

Haskap is a plant native to Siberia and Sakhalin.

From those faraway northern lands, migratory birds carried the seeds within their bodies, dropping them in Hokkaido’s Lake Utonai and the Yufutsu Moor near Tomakomai. Seeds that passed through the digestive tracts of birds — in other words, droppings.

And yet — from those “droppings,” one of Hokkaido’s greatest specialty products was born.

The haskap, treasured by the Ainu people as the “fruit of eternal youth,” and said to contain roughly five times the anthocyanins of blueberries — this small purple fruit began with the entirely casual “leftovers” of Siberian migratory birds.

The greatest things begin in the most unassuming of places.

This is much like art.

Chapter Two: It Grows Only in Harsh Conditions

Haskap thrives in the Yufutsu Moor — volcanic ash soil with strong drainage, a land far too harsh for ordinary plants.

Why did it take root there?

Haskap is a low-growing shrub, weak in competition with other plants. And yet it is extraordinarily resistant to cold. Precisely because the environment was too harsh for other plants to survive, haskap was able to form vast colonies without being defeated by rivals.

A paradox.

There are moments when weakness transforms into strength. That moment comes when one finds the “place” where one’s weakness shines most brightly.

By finding precisely that “place” — the harshness of Siberia and the wild moor of Hokkaido — haskap became an existence that no one could surpass.

Chapter Three: A Fleeting Fruit That Can Only Be Delivered Fresh

Haskap has another face.

Once fully ripe, the skin becomes so thin and soft that it is crushed simply by being plucked. Fresh berries cannot be shipped to the rest of Japan, and must be immediately frozen on site or processed into jam, juice, or confections.

That is precisely why, only during the brief window from mid-June to early July each year, haskap can only be tasted in Hokkaido.

This, too, resembles fireworks.

It is beautiful precisely because it blooms for only a moment. The brilliance of the fleeting instant holds the truest value.

“Fireworks are beautiful because they vanish; life is precious because it is short” — words I once wrote in my Tsurezuregusa. Today, I found those same words dwelling within this small haskap berry.

Chapter Four: Non arrenderti mai — Never Give Up

September 6, 2018.

The Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake.

Atsuma and the surrounding areas suffered unprecedented damage.

At the Yamaguchi Farm, approximately 500 of the roughly 5,000 haskap trees under cultivation were buried and lost in landslides. Trees that had been carefully raised over many years disappeared beneath the earth in a single night.

And yet — Yoshinori Yamaguchi did not give up.

Into a farm that had lost 500 trees, he planted more than 1,000 new seedlings. And further — he shared his own haskap seedlings with the surrounding farms that had also suffered losses.

Nelle tue mani se vorrai, Il tuo destino avrai. If you wish it, in your hands your destiny shall be.

These words are the very embodiment of this man’s way of living.

In recent years, the haskap farms of Atsuma have recovered to record the greatest harvest since the earthquake.

Chapter Five: In a Small Corner of Hokkaido, I Found the Same Soul as Riku-Ryu

Non arrenderti mai — Never give up. Credi in te — Believe in yourself. Nelle tue mani se vorrai, Il tuo destino avrai — If you wish it, in your hands your destiny shall be.

These words embody the philosophy that the figure skating pair of Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara — known as “Riku-Ryu” — have lived out across seven years of their journey together.

Yet today, I realized something.

In a small corner of Hokkaido called Atsuma — losing a farm to a landslide, and yet planting twice as many seedlings, and sharing those seedlings with the surrounding farms that had also suffered — Yoshinori Yamaguchi’s way of living carries precisely the same soul as Riku-Ryu.

The stage is different. Ice and farmland. And yet —

The will to never give up. The strength to believe in oneself. The destiny that dwells within one’s own hands.

These appear in the same form, transcending place and era.

Epilogue: What the Fruit of Eternal Youth Taught Me

As I put the three kilograms of haskap I harvested today into the freezer, I think.

Within these small purple fruits, there is the long journey of migratory birds carrying seeds from Siberia; the tenacity of growing into vast colonies while losing to competitors in a harsh moor; and the will of more than 1,000 seedlings planted in place of the 500 trees lost to the earthquake.

And there is the transient beauty of being able to encounter them only in this one season each year.

Haskap is the fruit of eternal youth. Yet its true meaning may lie not in the power to live long, but in the power to rise again, again and again.

Beginning from a bird’s droppings, growing in the harshness of the moor, recovering from an earthquake to achieve the greatest harvest — the very history of this fruit is itself a philosophy of life.
