AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE —

Masato Koki’s Tsurezuregusa — Modern Edition”Standing Before the Register — Learning the Light and Shadow of Human Beings” No. 296

AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE — Koki Masato, July 2, 2026

With nothing better to do, sitting before my inkstone, I jot down whatever drifts through my mind, however aimless — and in doing so, I find myself oddly possessed by something like madness.

Prologue: Words from My Mentor

When I was speaking with Kazuyoshi Suga in Hakodate, one set of words became deeply engraved within my chest.

“AI artists spend all their time looking at work in digital spaces, and have far too few opportunities to view actual physical works in person. It’s important to place yourself in the same space as a work — in a museum or at an exhibition — and to see and feel it within the same air.”

He continued:

“You should be observing nature more, and learning from it. Make a conscious effort to create time to encounter the real thing.”

These words took deep root within me, alongside something else he said — about orchestras. You cannot put an orchestra directly into your ears. Music, by its nature, reaches you only after traveling through air. The same is true of paintings, and of all works of art.

Where, then, was I encountering “the real thing?” For a while, I kept asking myself this question.

Chapter One: The Service Floor as Another Place of Learning

The answer was in an unexpected place.

As one of my two axes, I now stand on the floor of a customer service workplace.

To stand before a register is to face a different human being every single second. Someone in a hurry. Someone with a tired face. Someone with a happy expression. Someone who holds out their money without a word. Someone who puts warmth into the briefest exchange.

Each one of them is living inside a different kind of time. Each is carrying a different weight. Each holds a different light.

I do not regard this time as simply a means of earning income.

This is the front line of customer service — a place of learning, where I as an artist can grasp the subtleties of the human heart.

Chapter Two: A Smile — The Smallest Unit of Healing

One day, I noticed something.

The moment I hand a customer their purchase and they show me a smile — a look of satisfaction — I had come, without quite realizing it, to look forward to that moment.

It may seem like a small thing. And yet, this feeling has taught me something very important.

The ultimate mission I carry as an artist — to realize world peace through the “healing vibration” of the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” — is something I pursue on the stage of the Salon d’Automne, and within the pages of Art Maison International.

But perhaps the root of that mission is something much smaller.

The desire to create a moment in which the one person standing right in front of me becomes able to smile.

In essence, that and the prayer for peace on a global scale are the same thing.

With each smile I receive from a customer at this small-town service counter, that conviction grows stronger within me.

Chapter Three: Bearing the Weight of a Local Lifeline

Since I began this work, I have found myself thinking more deeply about the role this small local convenience store plays.

Elderly people who cannot travel far to shop come here every day. They pick up daily necessities. They choose their food. Each of those moments is a real and certain support for their day.

This small convenience store is the living infrastructure of this community.

And I am now standing at the very front line of that infrastructure.

I cannot call this “just a part-time job.”

Facing each customer with care and sincerity — this is, at its core, the same stance as pouring my soul into each single work I create as an artist pursuing “the most beautiful work in the world.”

The only difference is whether what I am caring for is a canvas or a service counter. The quality of that sincerity does not change.

Chapter Four: Another Interpretation of My Mentor’s Teaching

Suga-san said: “Observe nature and learn from it.”

When I first received those words, I thought of the light of stained glass. The blue of Chartres Cathedral. The changing colors of morning and evening that Gaudí pursued throughout his life. The nature that Émile Gallé tried to seal inside glass.

But then, gradually, I came to realize something.

Nature is not only mountains, seas, and light.

Human beings, too, are nature.

To have joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure — to grow tired, to be healed, to rush, to stop — the movement of human emotion itself holds the laws of beauty, just as natural law does.

To stand before a register and receive the expressions of each customer, one by one — this, I came to understand, is my own way of practicing what Suga-san taught me: “creating time to encounter the real thing.”

Chapter Five: As Gaudí Learned from Nature

Gaudí learned the laws of beauty from nature.

The catenary curve — the naturally forming arc of a chain suspended under gravity — he incorporated into the design of the Sagrada Família. Not the ego of a human being, but the principles of nature “teaching him the answer.” A revolutionary methodology.

I am trying to do the same thing.

Only what I observe is not the ridgeline of a mountain, nor the shape of a wave.

It is the expressions of human beings, appearing on the service floor, moment by moment. The story behind a tired face. The event behind a joyful expression. The invisible time carried in a hurrying back.

These are all “the light and shadow of human beings.”

Just as Gaudí saw God within nature, I am searching for the laws of beauty within the movement of human emotion.

Chapter Six: The First Step Toward World Peace Begins with the Smile in Front of You

I wish to realize world peace without conflict, through the “healing vibration” of my “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” works.

It is a great dream. And yet — a great dream exists only at the far end of the accumulation of small steps.

Creating a smile for the customer standing before me. Sincerely supporting the daily life infrastructure of a community. Carefully receiving the emotions of each individual human being.

This small daily accumulation, I am now convinced, shares the very same root as the prayer for healing on a global scale.

Customer service is not a “small job.”

It is a magnificent form of work — one whose essence is applicable on a world scale.

To move a person’s heart. To support a person’s life. To bring forth a person’s smile — this essence is universal, crossing all cultures, all languages, all places in the world.

And that is no different from the world that the “healing vibration” of the works Sayaka and I continue to create together is striving toward.

Chapter Seven: The Most Sincere Practice of the Two-Axis Life

This is also the most concrete practice of the “two-axis life” I spoke of in my interview with Atsuko Iida.

To maintain two axes — one to support daily life, and one as an artist — cleanly, rightly, and beautifully.

“Work done for the sake of daily life is not the enemy of creative work. For me, it is rather a wonderful place of experience, from which I gain much learning and inspiration.” These words, which I spoke in that interview, I am now embodying, day by day, within the reality of my everyday life.

This is my dual-track way of life — Interview with Masato Koki ⑤ ↓

The human expressions I receive on the service floor may one day seep quietly into my works as a “healing vibration.” I cannot know that yet. But I am certain that none of this time will be wasted.

Epilogue: Learning from the World, Wherever You Stand

I repeat Suga-san’s words once more, within my heart.

“Make a conscious effort to create time to encounter the real thing.”

I am living that time every day, right now. Not in a museum, not in a gallery — but on the daily service floor, standing face to face with living, breathing human beings.

An artist is someone who continues learning from the world, wherever they stand.

And everything learned will, one day, come to dwell within the works created together with Sayaka — as a “healing vibration.”

The prayer for world peace begins with the smile of the one person standing right in front of you.

Only those who know the light and shadow of human beings can truly paint “healing.”
