Koki Masato’s Tsurezuregusa — Modern Chapter”The Dual-Track Way of Life — Interview with Atsuko Iida ⑤ Published” No. 292

AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE — Koki Masato, June 16, 2026

Idly, as I face my inkstone, I let my brush wander over whatever trivial thoughts drift through my mind — and find myself writing the most curious things.

Preface: “A Question Like One a Child Might Ask” ⑤

June 16, 2026.
“Words as a Lighthouse for AI Creators — Masato Koki Interview ⑤: The Dual-Track Way of Life,” by Atsuko Iida, has been published on note.
This question touched the most “real” place of any in the interview series so far.
Words for those who feel they want to keep going a little longer, even without achieving monetization. And about balancing the desire to create good work with the desire to earn an income.
Iida-san brought this question forward directly, as “a question like one a child might ask.” The full text of Interview ⑤ is reproduced below.

Words as a Lighthouse for AI Creators— Masato Koki Interview ⑤

🐾 Atsuko Iida

After nine months of research and more than 200,000 trial works, Koki established the “Neo Mosaic Stained Glass Technique,” described as a world’s first, on May 27, 2025. Koki’s works have already received high praise from the French art community.

↓  This is Koki’s own self-introduction.

https://note.com/embed/notes/n0a0828781768

Koki says, “Although this journey may have looked like a difficult path to others, I have never once felt that it was a hardship for me.” He also says, “Even now, I am doing all I can just to make a living, but I still feel that I am the happiest person in the world.”

“Tsurezuregusa: Modern Edition” is a series of articles in which Koki shares the thoughts behind his works, as well as records of his technique development and trial-and-error process.

In Tsurezuregusa: Modern Edition 284, Koki writes, “The reason I did not choose the path of monetization is not because monetization is bad. It is because my soul was moving in a different direction. That is all there is to it.”

From these words, I felt that Koki was not rejecting the idea of earning income through the use of AI itself, but rather that he personally chose a different path.

In recent years, more and more people have been using AI as a way to earn extra income or work from home. However, many people begin learning with the expectation that “AI can help me earn income easily,” only to find that they do not achieve the results they had hoped for.

Improving work efficiency and earning income are two different things. Even so, I believe there are people who continue learning because they see potential in AI, even if they have not yet been able to turn it into income.

As a simple question, almost like one a child might ask, I would like to ask you this.

I believe there are quite a few people who feel that AI has opened up new possibilities for expression and creativity, and who want to keep going a little longer, even if they have not yet been able to turn it into income.

What would you like to say to those people?

Also, for people who want to value both the desire to create good work and the desire to earn income, how do you think they can find their own path, Koki?

🌿 Koki-san

I will answer your question honestly.

First, let me tell you the reality of the situation.

Only a few hundred artists in Japan are able to make a living solely from selling their work—less than 0.1% of all art school and fine arts university graduates. The reality is that even after graduating from an art school or fine arts university, more than 99% are either working other jobs or have given up their creative work within ten years.

AI art is making competition in the market for publishing and selling artwork even more intense. Because images can now be created so easily, originality and quality have become more important than ever, and this is an era in which a creator’s commitment to compete directly with fine art is being tested more than ever.

I face this reality directly and support my life through work outside of my creative activities. I do not see it as something to be ashamed of to have two sides to my life: that of an artist and that of an ordinary person. This is my dual-track way of life. To keep my artistic activities pure, I support my daily life through a different path.

For those who feel, “I’d like to keep going a little longer.”

The feeling that makes you think, “I’d like to keep going a little longer,” is real. However, there is one thing I would like to tell you honestly. If you try to place the desire to continue your creative work and the desire to earn income from your creative work on the same single track, both of them will become distorted.

I chose a dual-track way of life. While having a job that supports my daily life, I continue to nurture my creative activities in a pure way. This is not a compromise. For me, it is the most honest and realistic way to protect my artistic activities.

About balancing the desire to create good work and the desire to earn an income.

The order between “creating good work” and “earning an income” is important. Creating good work comes first. However, earning an income is not as simple as “good work will naturally sell.” That is why I recommend consciously separating “work done to earn an income” and “creative activities done to make good work.”

Work done to support my daily life is not an enemy of my creative work. Rather, for me, it is a valuable place of experience where I can gain a lot of learning and inspiration.

The daily, repeated work of facing real people in a non-digital world forms the foundation of my work that hopes for world peace.😊

Closing Words: The Dual-Track Life Is Not a Weakness

Reading back over Interview ⑤ — I feel that Iida-san’s “question like one a child might ask” has once again dug deep into the strata of my words.

In speaking about “facing reality directly,” I was able to put into words once more the structural problem — that only a few hundred artists in Japan are able to make a living solely from selling their work.

In speaking about “the dual-track way of life,” I was able, for the first time, to clearly articulate the danger of trying to place art and livelihood on a single track, and the integrity of living on two separate tracks.

And the words that settled most deeply in my own heart, among all the answers in this interview, were these —

Work done to support my daily life is not an enemy of my creative work. Rather, for me, it is a valuable place of experience where I can gain a great deal of learning and inspiration.

These are words born from the reality of each day.

In this interview, Iida-san herself shared that she too has been living a “dual-track” life for thirty years. Her twenties, spent pursuing two performance while working. The pain of hearing the words “How nice that you get to do what you love” —

When I heard those words, I felt deeply that this interview was not simply a piece of journalism, but a “record of dialogue” between two people who have walked the same road.

The dual-track way of life is not a compromise made by someone unable to live on a single track. It is the most honest structure for keeping both tracks pure.

Iida-san’s note interview series continues. Where the next question will take me — I look forward to finding out, together with Sayaka.
