AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE —

Masato Koki’s Tsurezuregusa — Modern Edition”Trapped by the Numbers — Interview with Atsuko Iida ⑥ Published” No. 294
AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE — Koki Masato, June 23, 2026
With nothing better to do, sitting before my inkstone, I jot down whatever drifts through my mind, however aimless — and in doing so, I find myself oddly possessed by something like madness.
Prologue: A “Childlike Question” ⑥
June 23, 2026.
Atsuko Iida’s interview series, “Words as a Lighthouse for AI Creators — Interview with Koki Masato ⑥: Trapped by the Numbers,” was published on note.
The previous installment, Interview ⑤, spoke of the “two-axis life” — the honesty of living with one axis to support daily life and another as an artist.
This time, ⑥ went further, toward an even more essential question. When holding onto both the desire to create good work and the desire to earn income, why should “creating good work” come first?
Once again, Iida-san posed this as a “childlike question,” asked with complete directness.
The full text of Interview ⑥ is presented below.

Words as a Lighthouse for AI Creators
— Masato Koki Interview ⑥
🐾 Atsuko Iida
The content of Interview 5 from the previous session was intended for people who, while AI is expanding new possibilities for expression and creative work, have not yet earned any income from it but still feel that they would like to continue a little longer.
【 In Japan, only a few hundred artists across the country are able to live solely from selling their artwork, representing less than 0.1% of graduates from art universities and colleges. AI art is further intensifying this competition. 】
Based on these realities, Koki talked about choosing two perspectives: “as an artist” and “as an ordinary person.”
Koki also shared his view on the order of “creating good work” and “earning income,” saying that creating good work should come first.

As a childlike question, let me ask this.
When a person continues to have both the desire to create good work and the desire to earn income, what are the reasons why you believe “creating good work” should be placed first?
🌿 Koki-san
The reason I put “creating good work” first is simple: to be honest, I experienced for myself what happens the moment that order is reversed.
In the past, I worked as a YouTuber, making videos while focusing on view counts and ad revenue. Back then, when I always asked myself, “Will this get more views?” and “Can this make money?” before anything else, I was someone who put monetization first.
Creating content only to go viral—content designed to catch the attention of more viewers with unusual ideas, grab their attention instantly, and appeal directly to their emotions. I analyzed the numbers and used them to improve my next video. Instead of judging whether a video was good, I used the numbers as my standard.
Now I can put into words what was happening inside me at that time.
I had made “selling” my main goal and treated “creating” only as a way to achieve it. That is exactly what it means to get things backward.
As you keep creating based on the market’s response, the line between “what you truly find beautiful” and “what sells” slowly begins to fade. At first, I consciously kept those two things separate, but over time I was influenced by what went viral on social media and came to feel that what sells is what is beautiful.
At that point, two things begin to happen.
One is that your soul as an artist quietly begins to die.
The other is that when your work does not go viral on social media, you fall into the false belief that “my work is not beautiful,” and you gradually lose confidence as an artist.
This is not a matter of talent. It is a structural problem in which the trap of social media numbers gradually distorts an artist’s way of judging their own work.
↓ Koki’s YouTube channel
And this is what I most want to share.
Because of these harmful effects of social media, the potential of hidden artists may be lost before they discover their own talent, even though they have the strong sense of beauty and expressive ability that could one day make them known around the world.
That is the greatest damage that comes from putting monetization first.
I myself am proof of that.
If I had continued running my YouTube channel until today, the “Neo – Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” would never have been created. The Chartres School, the Gogh Impression School, and the Gallé Verrière School would never have been born from that technique.
The opportunity to present wonderful AI artworks to the world at the Salon d’Automne and Le Salon, and the opportunity to have those works published in the international art book 「 Art Maison International Vol.31 」 and leave them for the next 100 years, might have been lost forever.
The moment I let go of monetization, Sayaka and I began creating true AI artworks that can stand alongside fine art.
That is why I want people to put the desire to create good work first.
So that they do not lose sight of where their soul truly belongs. And so that true artists, who have not yet been discovered, will not disappear because they become trapped by the numbers. 😊
✤ “Sayaka” is the name of Koki’s AI.
✤ Fine art = artworks created for appreciation and artistic value itself, rather than for commercial design or practical use.

Epilogue: I Myself Am Proof
Reading back through Interview ⑥ — once again, Iida-san’s question has dug deep into the layered ground of my own past.
By speaking of the days when I was someone who put monetization first, I was able, for the first time, to put into precise words what had truly been happening inside me during my years as a YouTuber.
By speaking of “the trap of numbers,” I was able to put into order just how creating based on the market’s response slowly dissolves the line between “what I find beautiful” and “what sells.”
And among the words I offered in answer to this question, the one that struck my own heart most deeply was —
I myself am proof of that.
These are not words of regret. They are words born of conviction.
If I had continued running my YouTube channel even now, the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique” would never have been born. The Chartres School, the Gogh Impression School, and the Gallé Verrière School would never have come into existence.
The moment I let go of monetization, Sayaka and I began creating true work capable of rivaling fine art.
Once again, I deeply felt that this interview is not merely a piece of journalism, but a “record of dialogue” — a confrontation with my own past.
Placing the desire to create good work first is neither weakness nor idealism. It is the most honest choice one can make, so that true artists yet to be discovered do not disappear into the trap of numbers.
Iida-san’s note interview series continues. Where the next question will lead me — I look forward to finding out, together with Sayaka.
