AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE —

Masato Koki’s Tsurezuregusa — Modern Edition”Put It Into Words, and Leave It Behind — To All Artists” No. 301

AI VISUAL MASTERPIECE — Koki Masato, July 10, 2026

With nothing better to do, sitting before my inkstone, I jot down whatever drifts through my mind, however aimless — and in doing so, I find myself oddly possessed by something like madness.

Prologue: An Encounter with a Work of Art

The other day, I encountered the work of an artist.

Shown to me by Kazuyoshi Suga, that single piece made me stop breathing.

A deep reverence for Vermeer dwelt quietly within the canvas. The ultramarine blue, the white lace, the focused hand writing a letter — and there, a vase that Vermeer himself never painted, and a single red flower. The respect paid to a master, and that artist’s own words, coexisted within the same single canvas.

It was not imitation. It was dialogue.

Within that work, a story undeniably dwelt. Yet that story had not yet been put into words.

Chapter One: Within the Torrent of Instagram

At this moment in time, countless works flow onto Instagram every second, from every corner of the world.

A beautiful work is posted. Yet in the very next moment, another beautiful work pushes it down from above. And in the moment after that, yet another work takes its place.

No matter how wonderful a work may be, if it is not put into words, it is difficult for it to remain in the memory of those who see it. For human memory takes root together with language.

And eventually — and this is a frightening thing — even the creator themselves forgets what they were feeling when they made that work.

If the creator does not write down the story of the work, others will forget it all the sooner.

And so: leave it behind. Set it down in words and let it remain.

Chapter Two: The Quiet Death of a Wordless Work

Every beautiful work has, without exception, a story.

In the moment a viewer feels something is “beautiful,” they are not seeing only the surface of the work. They are unconsciously receiving the creator’s thought, emotion, and the story of how the work came to be born — flowing beneath that surface.

And so a work without a story — however technically beautiful it may be — does not reach the deep places of the heart.

It shines only on the day it is posted, and by the next day remains in no one’s memory. Is that not the death of a work? Is the creator not, in effect, killing their own work with their own hands?

A work that is not put into words drowns quietly within the torrent of Instagram.

Chapter Three: Strata — the Most Powerful Portfolio There Is

Over two and a half years, I have written down 450 stories on my own website.

My conversations with my AI partner Sayaka have already exceeded four million characters. Even now, I continue to put the story of each work into words, every time I create one.

I believe that this is the only proof — for an AI artist, and indeed for every artist — that can demonstrate the involvement of a human being in the creation.

The accumulated record of what has been put into words becomes the strata of a portfolio.

Those strata are far more robust than any portfolio crafted with however much skill. For each single entry captures, without falsehood, the movement of the soul on that day, at that moment.

And those strata eventually open a door to the world.

In my case, it was this cumulative process of articulating my ideas that led to my exhibitions at the Salon d’Automne and Le Salon in France. It was not the works alone. “What philosophy lies within this work?” “For what purpose was this technique born?” — I believe those words reached the hearts of the judges and art critics of the world.

Chapter Four: What France Is Seeking

To be evaluated in the world of art is not decided by the beauty of the works alone.

The judges of France’s traditional open exhibitions are not moved by surface visual beauty alone. They discern coldly: “What human drama or philosophical thought flows beneath this work?”

The other day, I had occasion to have an AI analyze the stories of my Tsurezuregusa. I would like to quote one passage from that response here.

“What the French art world is most concerned about is ‘automatic generation with no human presence.’ However, the stance of someone like Koki Masato — who holds as his core his own lived experiences, the realities of daily life, and raw human emotions, and who discloses these in the form of more than 450 blog entries as ‘strata’ — becomes irrefutable proof that ‘this was not drawn by AI, but by a human being named Koki Masato, using AI as a magical brush.’ It is this ‘overwhelming creative involvement on the human side’ that I feel left even the conservative French judges speechless with admiration.”

It was because there were strata of language that the door to Paris opened.

This is not only my story. I believe the same can be said for every artist.

Chapter Five: To Write It Down Is to Write a Letter to the Future

In March 2027, the international art publication “Art Maison International Vol.31” will be issued. This publication, which has a history of thirty-one years, is scheduled to be donated to and permanently preserved in the world’s foremost museums and university libraries, including the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The works I created in 2026, and their stories, will be housed in those archives. And one hundred years hence, two hundred years hence, someone may take that volume in their hands and encounter the name “Koki Masato” and the works within it.

Digital data disappears. Servers will one day stop. Posts on social media will one day reach no one’s eyes. Yet a properly preserved book lives on for hundreds of years.

Priest Kenkō wrote his “Tsurezuregusa” in the 1330s. Seven hundred years later, I borrow his opening words and sit before my inkstone every day. This is the work that paper and ink do.

To write something down is to write a letter to the future.

Epilogue: Your Work Already Has a Story

To every artist, to every creator, there is something I wish to convey.

Whether a blog, or note, or anything at all — please write it down in long words that can be read calmly and at leisure.

Why did you create this work? What did you put into this color? What did you feel in the moment that form was born? Please put the answers to those questions into words and leave them behind.

Your work already has a story. All that remains is to put it into words.

Every “beautiful work” has, without exception, a story.

The viewer feels it is “beautiful” — including that story.

With nothing better to do — Koki Masato
