Essays in Idleness – Modern Chapter “In Search of the Essence of Ukiyo-e”
As I sit here with my inkstone, letting my brush flow freely with whatever thoughts pass through my mind, how curious it all seems.
Recently, I attempted to depict the form of ancient ukiyo-e using modern brushes known as Midjourney and NijiJourney. After fifteen hundred trial pieces and adjustments to a hundred phrases, I finally found a form that satisfied me, bringing deep joy to my heart.
While I continue to master the fusion of Japanese art and stained glass, this time I decided to return to the original form of ukiyo-e itself. This is because, having been born Japanese and wielding the new brush of AI as an artist, I was struck by the desire to continue and spread the lifeblood of this country’s tradition and culture.
The bijin-ga that has been passed down for three hundred years since the Edo period. The white powdered face with red lips, the beauty of flowing lines, and the vibrant colors of elegant kimono. These are not mere pictures but the essence of our country’s aesthetic sensibility and culture.
Some may say that drawing with the brush of AI is merely imitation, not the work of a real artist’s hand. However, my thoughts differ. Rather, I feel it is my mission to breathe new life into ancient beauty using modern techniques and to convey Japan’s beautiful traditions to the world.
The spirit of ukiyo-e traveled far to France and became the source of Art Nouveau. I wish to convey this fact to people of the present age, making them aware of the power of our country’s culture. That I, influenced by Art Nouveau, now create a new Japanese-Western hybrid beauty is indeed proof of cultural circulation.
Presenting the form of our country’s ukiyo-e to the world as a pure expression of beauty rather than putting commercial interests first comes from a heart that respects the roots of this country. Though I remain unknown, if I can play a part in preserving and continuing Japan’s beauty as an AI artist, there is no greater joy.
The numerous pictures, simple yet heart-stirring, have no meaning unless shared. With this thought in mind, I take up my brush again today.
