Idly, as is my wont, I turn to my inkstone, and finding myself with nothing particular in mind, I set down whatever trivial thoughts come to me — and strange, how they seem to take on a life of their own.

“We are engaged.”
Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara — the pair known as “RikuRyu” — delivered those words to the world through their Instagram accounts.
The gold medal at the figure skating pairs event at the Milano Cortina Olympics in February 2026 — the first achievement of its kind in the history of Japanese figure skating. Before the emotion of that triumph had faded, they announced their retirement from competitive skating in April. These words are the very story of RikuRyu’s journey.
Chapter Two: “Nelle tue mani — Within Your Hands”
For the 2025–2026 season — the season of the Milano Cortina Olympics — RikuRyu chose “Nelle tue mani (Now We Are Free)” as their free program music. It is a celebrated piece, the theme from the film Gladiator, also well known through the performance of tenor Andrea Bocelli.
There was deep meaning in their choice of this program. As Ryuichi Kihara had spoken about, at the heart of this program lay a strong resolve — “we will forge our own path ourselves” — and the theme of seizing one’s destiny with one’s own hands.
“Nelle tue mani se vorrai Il tuo destino avrai — If you so wish, within your hands, your destiny awaits.”
I inscribed these words from Andrea Bocelli’s performance into Tsurezuregusa No. 265, “Nelle tue mani — Finally Free — Your Destiny Is Within Your Hands.”
Destiny is not something given to you by another. It is something you seize with your own hands. Yet — those “hands” need not always be a single person’s hands.
When two pairs of hands are joined together, a door of destiny that could never have been reached alone swings open.
It is widely known that when Ryuichi Kihara took Riku Miura’s hand for the first time at their pairs tryout, he felt: “This is destiny.” Those “hands of destiny” crystallized upon the ice in the form of choosing “Nelle tue mani” as their free program for the 2025–2026 season.
The countless memories of hands joined on the ice that RikuRyu have accumulated — hands supporting each other through spins, hands lifting high in lifts, hands that praised each other after a performance — the accumulation of all of those was what seized the “destiny” of a gold medal upon the ice of Milano in February 2026.

And today — a kneeling on the ice, and a ring.
Those hands are now joined in an entirely different meaning.
Chapter Three: “At the Place Where We Formed Our Pair”
After the engagement announcement, Riku wrote on X:
