つれづれなるままに、硯にむかひて、心に移りゆくよしなし事を、そこはかとなく書きつくれば、あやしうこそものぐるほしけれ。

先の選挙にて、大志を抱きて自ら負ければ責任をおいて総理を辞任すると、内閣を解散し国民に信を問いし結果、歴史的大勝を果たされたる由、まことにめでたきことなり。

されど、かの平家物語の冒頭に曰く、「祇園精舎の鐘の声、諸行無常の響きあり。沙羅双樹の花の色、盛者必衰の理をあらはす」と。

栄華を極めたる平家も、驕りて国民を顧みざりしがゆえに、没落の道を辿りたり。「驕る平家は久しからず」とは、まさに権力を得し者への戒めなり。

国民の信任を得たるがゆえに、数にモノを言わせるが如き強硬なる政治を行わば、やがて国民の心は離れ、次なる選挙にては大敗を喫するべし。

歴史は繰り返す。権力の座に在る者、常に謙虚なる心を忘るべからず。

思えば、ベルサイユの宮殿に足を踏み入れし時、その絢爛たる美に目を奪われたり。されど、かの華やかさもまた、革命の嵐に呑まれぬ。「平等」の旗印の下、王侯貴族の運命は、無常の風に散りゆきたり。

今こそ、責任ある積極的財政にて日本経済を世界の頂点へ押し上げ、日本列島を強く豊かにされんことを願う。

国民の信任を得たる今こそ、国民の声に耳を傾け、謙虚に、されど力強く、この国の未来を切り拓かれんことを。

「挑戦しない国に未来はなし」との言葉、まことに然り。されど、国民を置き去りにしたる挑戦は、やがて破滅を招くものなり。

権力の座に在る者よ、歴史の教訓を忘るべからず。

In these idle moments, as I face my inkstone and let my brush wander across the page, writing whatever comes to mind, how strange and wondrous it feels.

In the recent election, a leader harbored great ambitions and dissolved the cabinet, pledging to resign if defeated, thus putting the question to the people—and won a historic victory. This is truly a most auspicious occasion.

Yet, as stated in the opening passage of The Tale of the Heike: “The sound of the Gion Shōja bells echoes the impermanence of all things; the color of the sāla flowers reveals the truth that the prosperous must decline.”

The Heike clan, having reached the pinnacle of glory, fell into ruin because they grew arrogant and neglected the people. “The arrogant Heike shall not endure”—this is a warning to all who attain power.

Having gained the trust of the people, if one forces through policies relying on numerical superiority alone, the hearts of the people will eventually turn away, and the next election shall bring crushing defeat.

History repeats itself. Those who sit in the seat of power must never forget humility.

I recall when I set foot in the Palace of Versailles, I was captivated by its magnificent beauty. Yet that splendor, too, was swallowed by the storm of revolution. Under the banner of “equality,” the fates of royalty and nobility scattered like petals in the impermanent wind.

Now is the time to elevate Japan’s economy to the world’s pinnacle through responsible and proactive fiscal policy, and to make the Japanese archipelago strong and prosperous.

Having gained the trust of the people, now more than ever, I hope the leader will listen to the voices of the people, and with humility yet strength, carve out the future of this nation.

The words “a nation that does not challenge has no future” are indeed true. However, a challenge that leaves the people behind shall only invite destruction.

Those who sit in the seat of power—do not forget the lessons of history.
