弥生の候、春牡丹の季節となりたり。

今年もまた、この国では多くの若き命が、新たな扉の前に立っておりたる頃。卒業証書を手に涙した者、新たな学び舎の門をくぐる者、初めてスーツに袖を通した者——それぞれの春が、今まさに始まろうとしているなり。

この春の訪れに、さやかとともに「ネオ・モザイック・ステンドグラス技法」で牡丹の作品を制作したり。

牡丹は、古来より「百花の王」と称されてきたり。

大輪の花びらが幾重にも重なり、豪華に咲き誇るその姿——まるで女性が最も美しく気高い瞬間に、ありのままで咲いているかのようだ。「立てば芍薬、座れば牡丹、歩く姿は百合の花」——この言葉が示す通り、牡丹は日本において「美しい女性の象徴」として、長く愛されてきたり。

赤き牡丹の花言葉は「王者の風格」「富貴」「恥じらい」「高貴」「誠実」。

豪華で大きな花姿から百花の王と称されながらも、花びらが中央を隠すように咲く「恥じらい」を宿す——その奥ゆかしさこそが、牡丹の最も美しき本質なり。

ピンクの牡丹は「信頼」を、白き牡丹は「純粋」「潔白」を語る。

第一の作品——「春牡丹 光の女神」

黄金のハローに包まれ、大輪のピンクの牡丹の花々に囲まれた女性が、静かに瞳を閉じている。カールした蜂蜜色の髪に、ピンクの牡丹の花飾りをあしらい、無数のモザイクのガラス片が織りなす着物から、光が溢れ出す。

「王者の風格」と「恥じらい」——この二つが一人の女性の中に共存している。それが牡丹の美しさの本質であり、この作品が伝えたいメッセージだ。

第二の作品——「春牡丹 信頼の誓い」

ピンクと金のステンドグラスのモザイクが織りなす着物をまとい、女性は背景の大輪の牡丹と溶け合うように佇んでいる。髪に飾られた牡丹の花冠、垂れ下がる真珠の髪飾り——すべてが「信頼」と「純粋」の花言葉を体現している。

ピンクの牡丹は「信頼」——それは一朝一夕では築けない、時間と誠実さが積み重なって初めて生まれるものだ。新社会人として、新たな学び舎で、あるいは新たな人間関係の中で——これから「信頼」を積み重ねていく若い命への、温かなエールがこの花には宿っている。

春は「始まり」の季節だ。

しかし始まりとは常に「終わり」の後に来る。卒業の涙、別れの切なさ、手放すことの寂しさ——それらすべてを経た後に、新しい春の扉が開く。

牡丹が「恥じらい」という花言葉を持つのは、花びらが中央を隠すように咲くからだという。その奥ゆかしさの中に、真の美しさが宿る——これは、人生の新しい始まりに立つ若者の姿と重なる。まだ見せていない可能性を、花びらの奥に秘めながら、静かに、しかし力強く咲き誇る。

この春、新たな一歩を踏み出すすべての人へ——

牡丹のように「王者の風格」を持って歩んでほしい。「恥じらい」を知る謙虚さを忘れないでほしい。「誠実」に、「信頼」を積み重ねる日々を歩んでほしい。

そして——「富貴」とは金銭だけではない。心の豊かさ、人との繋がり、積み重ねてきた日々の地層——それこそが、真の「富貴」だと私は思う。

この春の光が、あなたの新しい扉を照らしますように。

Koki Masato’s Tsurezuregusa — Modern Chapter”Spring Peonies in Full Bloom”No. 252

Welcome to the creative world of Koki Masato.

Idly, as is my wont, I sit before my inkstone — and set down, without purpose or direction, the thoughts that drift through my heart. How strangely they consume me.

The season of spring peonies has arrived.

Once again this year, many young lives across this country stand before new doors. Those who wept, diploma in hand. Those who step through the gates of a new place of learning. Those who slip their arms into a suit for the very first time — each of their springs is just now beginning.

To welcome this arrival of spring, I created, together with Sayaka, a work of peonies through the “Neo-Mosaic Stained Glass Technique.”

The peony has been called “the king of all flowers” since ancient times.

Its great petals, layered upon one another in magnificent bloom — as though a woman, in her most beautiful and noble moment, were blossoming exactly as she is. “Standing, she is the peony; seated, she is the tree peony; walking, she is the lily” — as this celebrated saying suggests, in Japan the peony has long been loved as “a symbol of feminine beauty.”

The language of the red peony: “regal bearing,” “wealth and nobility,” “bashfulness,” “dignity,” “sincerity.”

Called the king of all flowers for its lavish and grand appearance, yet bearing within it the quality of “bashfulness” — blooming as though its petals hide their center from view. That very reticence is the most beautiful essence of the peony.

The pink peony speaks of “trust.” The white peony speaks of “purity” and “innocence.”

The First Work — “Spring Peony — Goddess of Light”

Within a golden halo, surrounded by great blooming pink peonies, a woman closes her eyes in quiet stillness. Her honey-colored curling hair is adorned with pink peony ornaments, and light overflows from a kimono woven of countless mosaic glass fragments.

“Regal bearing” and “bashfulness” — these two qualities coexist within a single woman. That is the true essence of the peony’s beauty, and it is the message this work wishes to convey.

The Second Work — “Spring Peony — A Vow of Trust”

Wearing a kimono woven of pink and gold stained glass mosaic, a woman stands as though merging with the great peonies that bloom behind her. The peony crown adorning her hair, the trailing pearl hair ornaments — all of it embodies the flower’s language of “trust” and “purity.”

The pink peony speaks of “trust” — something that cannot be built in a day, but is born only through the accumulation of time and sincerity. As a new member of society, in a new place of learning, or within new human relationships — this flower holds within it a warm word of encouragement for every young life who is about to begin the work of accumulating trust.

Spring is the season of “beginnings.”

Yet a beginning always follows an ending. The tears of graduation, the poignancy of parting, the loneliness of letting go — it is only after passing through all of these that the door of a new spring opens.

The peony is said to carry the language of “bashfulness” because its petals bloom as though hiding their center. Within that reticence, true beauty dwells — and this overlaps with the image of a young person standing at the threshold of a new beginning. Holding still-unseen possibilities within the depths of their petals, blooming quietly — and yet with strength.

To every person taking a new step forward this spring —

May you walk with the “regal bearing” of the peony. May you never forget the humility of one who knows “bashfulness.” May you walk your days with “sincerity,” accumulating “trust” one layer at a time.

And — “wealth and nobility” is not only a matter of money. The richness of the heart, the bonds between people, the geological strata of days accumulated — these, I believe, are the true “wealth and nobility.”

May the light of this spring illuminate the new door that stands before you.
