Modern Tsurezuregusa: On Learning and Facing Criticism

In this world, there are those who fail to grasp the value of things. Those who carelessly utter words, claiming no interest in the wisdom of the ancients, are truly foolish. Yet, pointing out their foolishness is futile. No words can reach their hearts; they pass by like the wind.

Those who have barely begun to learn often fail to recognize their own ignorance and disregard the wisdom of others. The one who claims to know everything is the true fool. The truly wise know the vastness of their own ignorance and maintain a humble heart eager to learn. O young student, be ashamed of your ignorance! To deny the value of ancient words simply because they do not interest you is shallow indeed. If you do not heed this, you shall spend your entire life as a fool.

Words that do not nourish my heart, works that do not stir my soul – there is no need to dwell on these. Some in this world say, “With money, anything can be done,” but these are merely the idle words of the heartless. To favor that which pleases the heart and avoid that which brings discomfort – this is the way of humanity, and there is nothing strange about it.

To be concerned with the gaze of others while walking one’s own path is foolish. Criticism and slander are like clouds; they come and go, not worthy of lingering in one’s heart. As the dew on Adashino vanishes, as the morning frost – in pondering where they have gone, one finds tranquility. To live according to one’s own beliefs is the most noble way of life. Do not be swayed by the words of others; listen to the voice of your own heart.

Those who are moved by money alone do not know true wealth. Satisfaction of the heart is the joy of living in this world. Walk together with those who understand your work, and bid farewell to those who do not. This is the art of maintaining peace of mind.

Let us proceed following only what we believe in. This is the duty of those born into this world. Must we only view flowers in full bloom and the moon when it is unblemished? True beauty and true value often go unnoticed, unswayed by the opinions of the world. Let us follow the inner voice of our hearts and quietly walk our own path.
