Essays in Idleness – Modern Chapter “Flower of Flame”

As I sit here with my inkstone, letting my brush flow freely with whatever thoughts pass through my mind, how curious it all seems.

There is a tale told of an ancient cathedral, where on the night of the full moon, a maiden depicted in stained glass would come to life and walk within its halls. Her gown was crafted from fiery red flowers and amber glass that seemed to capture the evening sun within its folds.

Her appearance was truly ethereal – when touched by moonlight, she would shine with silver radiance, and when bathed in morning light, she would blaze like golden flames. The flowers adorning her form seemed to live and breathe, changing their hues as she moved.

Some say she was the moon goddess incarnate, while others claim she was the spirit of flowers. Yet none knew the truth for certain. Only those who visited the cathedral on moonlit nights would sometimes speak of seeing a beautiful figure with golden hair, standing amidst falling orange petals.

Her presence, like a moment of eternity captured in art, would leave a profound impression on all who beheld her. Even now, they say, the cathedral’s stained glass windows continue to quietly tell this mysterious tale.
