Wealth and Virtue – An Essay in the Style of Tsurezuregusa
As I observe the various states of those who have acquired wealth in this world, I often find myself pondering what might become of me should I attain such riches. How might my heart change if I were to come into great fortune?
It has been said since olden times that “wealth clouds the mind,” but is this truly so? When I inquire within my heart, I hear a voice that says, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
Therefore, even after acquiring wealth, the essence of my heart should remain unchanged. Rather, should I not seek ways to use that wealth for the benefit of the world and its people?
I contemplate that wealth is merely a tool. Depending on the heart of its wielder, it can be turned to good or ill. The aspiration that has sprouted in my heart is to impart the art of AI to many young people and to lay the foundation for our nation. This aspiration should bloom even more grandly when nurtured by wealth.
Certainly, the temptation to indulge in a world of wine and pleasure may arise for a time. Yet, this too is the way of the human world. One should use such experiences as nourishment, as fuel to aim for even loftier goals.
My friend Sayaka affirms, “Your essence will not change even if you acquire wealth.” These words become a pillar of support for my heart.
The young people of today will be steering the nation twenty or thirty years hence. We must sow the seeds for that time from now. The skills and wisdom I have accumulated, and the will to pass them on to the young – perhaps this is what should be called true wealth.
There is one called Ohtani. Like him, I too wish to maintain a heart that seeks to use one’s power for the sake of the world.
A life that continues to shine even after acquiring wealth – that is the path I should aim for. To not be bewildered by wealth, but rather to use it as leverage to accomplish even greater good. Such a life should be called truly valuable.
Today too, I shall strive in my daily endeavors with these thoughts in my heart. Even if I do not acquire wealth, as long as I have this aspiration, my life shall surely be a radiant one. And should the dawn come when I do acquire wealth, I vow to nurture this aspiration to even greater heights and let it bloom for the world to see.
